Volunteer: Speak Spanish? Care about equity? Volunteer to interpret at ODC!

If you speak Spanish and care about equitable access to medical care, come join us at Open Door Clinic! We need your help as a volunteer medical interpreter. In fact, tiny but mighty ODC can only deliver care with the help of over 125 volunteer medical interpreters, medical providers, and office volunteers. Together, we served over 1,300 distinct un- and under-insured patients in 2024.

Spanish-speaking patients make up over 50% of our clinic appointments, so we depend on bilingual or highly fluent speakers of English and Spanish as volunteer medical interpreters. Interpreters facilitate the delivery of care and obtain first-hand experience with public health while shadowing a wide variety of healthcare professionals, both at Tuesday evening clinics held near the Middlebury campus, and dozens of weekday medical appointments in and around Middlebury each month.

Role Description

Volunteer medical interpreters facilitate communication between patients whose primary language is Spanish, medical providers and clinic staff. The volunteer interpreter’s primary role is that of conduit, accurately and completely interpreting everything that is said by both providers/clinic staff and patients throughout a patient’s medical visit. Every interpreter is required to attend a daylong training, preferably in person, but possibly online, before they start volunteering.

See a full role description here.

Learn more and download our volunteer application here.
You can complete the application even before you complete the required interpreter training.

Our next in-person training will be on Saturday, October 25, 2025 on the Middlebury campus. Questions? Contact Susannah McCandless, ODC Volunteer Coordinator, at smccandless@opendoormidd.org or 802.388.0137.

We need your help. We are currently looking for folks who can:

Deliver routes regularly (every week or every other week on the same day); Substitute in for openings throughout the month; Serve as on call volunteers who are able to step in in the case of last minute cancellations.

Time commitment is based on your availability--it can vary from one day a week to two days a month (weekdays only). Delivery is typically between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.

For more information, please contact the Volunteer Office: volunteer@agewellvt.org or 802-662-5249 or visit https://www.agewellvt.org/giving-back

Volunteer: Recruitment and Advocacy

Currently close to 1,000 children (2 out of 3 Addison County preschoolers) are participating in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and receiving a free book that is mailed to their home each month. Parents tell us how much their children value the program; some families report that the Imagination Library is the primary source for their children of books in their home.

Children who read and are read to from the earliest age build a foundation for literacy that lasts a lifetime. Volunteers are needed to help Addison County Readers make sure that the program is available to all county children.

Please consider joining us as a Recruitment and Advocacy Volunteer.  How you can help:

Make sure that family members, friends and neighbors with preschool children know about the Imagination Library.

Contact programs in your community that serve young children and ask them to share information about the program with parents.

Talk up the program.  Post information about the Imagination Library program in places your town where people congregate.

Addison County Readers has recruitment materials that can help you get started.

Volunteer: Tour Guides Needed @ Rokeby!

Four generations of the Robinson family lived in the house that is now central to Rokeby Museum, a National Historic Landmark comprised of nine historic buildings, miles of walking trails and a new gallery and education center. Robinson family members, generation by generation, made significant contributions as Abolitionists, farmers, writers, artists and active members of their community.

Today their stories are being told – via exhibits, programs and guided tours - to inspire respect for human potential and the environment.

You can make a difference too, by helping to tell the Robinson family stories.

The museum is now recruiting volunteers to conduct guided tours of the historic Robinson family home. Tours are given Fridays through Mondays beginning July 1 and running through October 28.

Volunteer tour guides need only commit to providing tours two days a month, but once you've attended the intriguing three-session guide training program, Rokeby thinks you'll want to do more – and learn more. Along with seasoned guides and staff, you'll have the opportunity to do both.

Volunteer: Addison County Restorative Justice Services

Addison County Restorative Justice Services, Inc. is looking for concerned, committed community members to make a difference in the lives of individuals convicted of serious offenses. Volunteers will help support an offender who has been released from prison to successfully re-enter the community through positive connections and encouragement. Additionally, by holding the offender, or core member, accountable to established expectations for community behavior, volunteers help interrupt the cycle of criminal offending. The commitment to do this work comes from our understanding that it is through relationships of compassion and accountability that those who have been damaging to others (often as a result of being damaged themselves) can change by acceptance and social reconciliation.  Trained COSA volunteers work in teams of 3-5 and meet weekly with the core member and COSA Coordinator to support the offender in returning to the community and managing everyday living.
